Portuguese academic culture runs a compact system anchored by historic public research universities and a small set of internationally competitive private schools. DGES, A3ES, CRUP, and FCT form a coordinated regulatory spine that every accredited institution now references in its academic integrity handbook.
Portugal runs one of the older university systems in Europe. The Universidade de Coimbra, founded in 1290, is one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world, and that institutional weight shapes how the modern Portuguese academy treats integrity. Undisclosed copying has always carried serious consequences inside the Portuguese system, and undisclosed generative AI is now treated through the same lens. DGES (Direcao-Geral do Ensino Superior) sets the policy frame, A3ES (Agencia de Avaliacao e Acreditacao do Ensino Superior) handles national accreditation, CRUP (Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas) coordinates rectors, and FCT (Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia) underwrites research funding.
Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa, merged in 2013 from the Classical and Technical universities), Universidade do Porto (UP), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL), Universidade de Coimbra (UC), Universidade do Minho (UM, Braga), Universidade de Aveiro, Universidade do Algarve, and ISCTE-IUL have all updated academic-integrity guidance, with departments setting more specific rules. Faculties of humanities and social sciences tend to be stricter on undisclosed AI use, while engineering and computer-science faculties are more comfortable with disclosed assistance for code and structure. The polytechnics (IPL Lisbon, IPP Porto, IP Coimbra, IP Braganca, and the regional network) followed the same path through 2025.
Universidade Catolica Portuguesa (UCP), Universidade Lusiada, Universidade Lusofona, Nova SBE (top-ranked in Iberia), and Catolica Lisbon SBE have each published their own positions. The business schools in particular run high-stakes case-based assessment, where group submissions and individual write-ups are both reviewed under integrity policy. Undisclosed AI in a case write-up is treated in the same category as undisclosed copying. Nova SBE and Catolica Lisbon, which pull MBA and Master in Management cohorts from across Europe, the Americas, Brazil, and Africa, have been particularly explicit about disclosure expectations.
Portugal applies the GDPR alongside Lei n.º 58/2019, which implements the regulation into national law, with the Comissao Nacional de Protecao de Dados (CNPD) as the supervisory authority. The EU AI Act is phasing in through 2025 and 2026 with Portugal aligned to the standard EU implementation timeline. A detector that ships without a clear GDPR posture does not clear procurement at ULisboa, U Porto, NOVA, or Coimbra. TextSight is GDPR-compliant on retention, export, and deletion, and the CNPD-aware bar is a feature for Portuguese users rather than friction.
Who runs AI detection across the public universities, the polytechnics, and the private business schools, what the policy looks like in practice, and where the Lisbon-Porto tech and remote-work pressure is coming from.
The Lisbon group (ULisboa, UNL, ISCTE-IUL) sits alongside the Porto group (U Porto), the Coimbra group (UC), and the regional research universities (U Minho in Braga, U Aveiro, U Algarve, UTAD in Tras-os-Montes, U Evora, U Beira Interior, U Madeira, U Acores). Education runs Exames Nacionais at high-school exit, followed by Licenciatura over three years (or Mestrado Integrado over five years for medicine, architecture, and most engineering tracks), Mestrado over one and a half to two years, and Doutoramento thereafter. Mid-degree work is the relatorio de estagio, end-master the dissertacao de mestrado, and the doctoral artifact is the tese de doutoramento. A3ES handles evaluation, CRUP coordinates the rectors, and DGES sets policy with FCT handling research funding. Turnitin coverage is broad across the public sector by 2026, with Compilatio as a secondary option in some humanities faculties.
Nova SBE (the Nova School of Business and Economics, consistently ranked top in Iberia and inside the top 30 European business schools), Catolica Lisbon SBE, U Porto MBA, ISCTE Business School, and UCP at large run MBA, MIM, Master in Management, and executive programmes with heavy international intake. Nova SBE and Catolica Lisbon in particular pull MBA cohorts from across Europe, the Americas, Brazil, Africa, and Asia, and English-medium assessment dominates the international tracks. Academic integrity expectations there are calibrated to professional-school norms rather than typical undergraduate ones. ESL false-positive risk is real in those cohorts and a calibrated detector matters.
Portuguese degree work commonly culminates in a substantial written artifact: the relatorio de estagio for licenciatura tracks with an internship component, the dissertacao de mestrado at master level, and the tese de doutoramento at doctoral level. A Turnitin AI flag on a dissertacao chapter is not just a grade question; it is a juri-trust question, and Portuguese faculties are small enough that reputation carries inside a discipline. A pre-scan before chapter handover has become standard practice across Portuguese Mestrado and Doutoramento cohorts working in English-medium tracks.
Lisbon and Porto host the Portuguese English content economy. Lisbon is the centre for tech (OutSystems, Talkdesk, Feedzai, Unbabel, Sword Health, Veniam, Remote, Farfetch through its IPO and subsequent Coupang acquisition), finance, hospitality, and global tourism content. Porto sits alongside with its own tech and wine-writing economy (Douro DOC reviews, port-wine commentary, gastronomy editorial). Portuguese journalism (Publico, Diario de Noticias, Jornal de Noticias, Expresso, ECO, Observador) sits alongside the freelance market. Upwork and Fiverr both added AI-content review to dispute resolution in 2025, and most in-house Portuguese content teams now run detection on incoming deliverables.

Portuguese degree work culminates in the relatorio de estagio at licenciatura level (for internship tracks), the dissertacao de mestrado at master level, and the tese de doutoramento at doctoral level. Most Portuguese students working in English-medium tracks settle into one of three TextSight patterns by their second semester.
Paste the essay or coursework into TextSight thirty minutes before the Moodle or Blackboard deadline. Read the Authenticity Score and the sentence-level colour map. If the score is below 70, rewrite the red sentences and re-scan. Submit once above 75. This catches both genuine ChatGPT residue and the false-positive flag that highly structured academic English at Nova SBE, Catolica Lisbon, ISCTE, and the ULisboa, U Porto, and UNL international tracks sometimes triggers, particularly when the student has been taught to write in a formally precise English register.
The standard Portuguese dissertacao de mestrado runs 50 to 120 pages depending on discipline; the tese de doutoramento is a multi-year artifact running several hundred pages. The same iterative use applies to doctoral chapter drafts before juri handover at any of the public universities or the private business schools. Scan after each major revision, not just at the end. The score should trend up as the draft tightens. If it does not, the issue is structural (paragraph templating, sentence-length flatness, formulaic transitions from formal English instruction) rather than wordsmithing, and you can fix it earlier in the cycle before your orientador or juri sees it.
Used most heavily by Nova SBE, Catolica Lisbon, U Porto MBA, and ISCTE Business School cohorts on weekly case work, and by international applicants writing supplementary essays for Nova SBE MIM, Catolica Lisbon Master in Management, or the ULisboa and UNL international tracks. Admissions essays are one-shot artifacts; a false-positive flag has a very different cost than a flag on a routine class assignment. A pre-scan is cheap insurance.
All three patterns work on the free tier for occasional submissions. Students with weekly essays or a dissertacao summer usually upgrade to Pro at $14.99 yearly (around €13.95), or $13.99 with a verified .pt email. The Chrome extension on Starter speeds up the workflow for students writing inside Google Docs or Word Online.
Upwork and Fiverr both added AI-content review to dispute resolution in 2025. A client who suspects AI-generated work can request a scan, and a high AI determination can hold or void milestone payment. For Portuguese freelancers earning EUR 30 to EUR 80 an hour on technical or marketing content, a single voided EUR 1,200 deliverable is a real loss.
Portugal has built one of southern Europe's strongest startup ecosystems over the last decade. Web Summit moved to Lisbon in 2016 and anchored a year-round ecosystem of founders, operators, and investors. Carnegie Mellon Portugal has run since 2006 as a long-standing research partnership producing PhD talent and spinouts in software and ML. The Lisbon and Porto tech scene (OutSystems, Talkdesk, Feedzai, Unbabel, Sword Health, Veniam, Remote, Farfetch) sits alongside finance, tourism, and editorial volume from Publico, Diario de Noticias, Jornal de Noticias, Expresso, ECO, and Observador. Add the IFICI regime (Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation, which replaced NHR when it ended in December 2023) and the digital-nomad visa, and you get a deep population of writers, marketers, developers, and consultants who deliver English work to US, UK, and northern-European clients from Lisbon, Porto, Madeira, and the Algarve.
Draft the deliverable normally (using ChatGPT, Claude, or any other model as an outline tool or first-pass research helper is widespread and not the issue), then scan the final deliverable before sending. Authenticity Score above 75 is the working floor for safety. Score below 70 means rewrite the flagged sentences before sending. The integrated AI rewriter is useful for fixing individual flagged lines without restructuring the whole piece.
Portuguese B2B SaaS teams, including OutSystems (unicorn), Talkdesk, Feedzai, Unbabel (AI translation), Sword Health, Veniam, and Remote, publish English landing pages, blog content, product documentation, and investor material for North American and broader European audiences. Wine writing on the Douro DOC and port-wine commentary, fado and cultural editorial, and tourism content for the Algarve and Madeira all increasingly go through English-language localisation for international audiences. Google's helpful-content signal weights AI patterns against ranking, so English content flagged as high-AI tends to underperform organically. A pre-publication scan is a cheap quality gate.
Senior Portuguese copywriters and EU-remote freelancers serving Lisbon- and Porto-headquartered platforms treat the pre-submission scan as part of the deliverable, not an optional QA step. Starter at $7.49 yearly (around €6.95) handles the volume for most individual contractors. Business at $29.99 yearly (around €27.95) covers small agency teams with bulk upload and five seats. The .pt and .edu.pt domains both work for the free signup and Pro upgrade flow.
Portugal is a bilingual writing market with a deep Portuguese-language tradition and a heavy English overlay in international tracks, tech publishing, and remote work. European Portuguese (PT-PT) is also a distinct variant from Brazilian Portuguese (PT-BR). We want to be plain about scope rather than oversell coverage we have not built.
This is where the classifier is calibrated. Portuguese tech writers producing English copy for international audiences, agencies writing English landing pages for hospitality or tourism clients, freelancers shipping to US and UK clients, and students submitting English-medium degree work at Nova SBE, Catolica Lisbon, ISCTE, U Porto, and the ULisboa, UNL, U Minho international tracks all sit in the strongest part of the tool.
Out of scope for the calibrated workflow. Accuracy on Portuguese-only text is meaningfully lower than on English. The classifier applies the patterns it learned in English training, but the result is less reliable. We do not recommend TextSight as the primary check for PT-PT-only dissertacoes or teses. For institutional Portuguese-language submissions, the Turnitin Portuguese check is the better fit where your school subscribes to it.
European Portuguese (PT-PT) is a distinct variant from Brazilian Portuguese (PT-BR) in vocabulary, syntax, verb conjugation (tu vs voce, second-person plural usage), and the post-2009 Acordo Ortografico has not eliminated practical differences in idiom and register. A classifier tuned mainly on English will not transfer cleanly to either variant. We have not published a Portuguese accuracy number and do not recommend the tool as a primary check for Portuguese-only text in either variant. For TCC or dissertacao written in PT-BR, see our Brazil page; the same out-of-scope framing applies to the Portuguese language itself.
A common pattern at Portuguese agencies and business schools is to draft in English for global audiences, then localise into European Portuguese (or further into Brazilian Portuguese for the Brazil market) on the publishing side. This works well in practice. TextSight scans the English source draft, the localisation pass sits outside our calibrated zone, and the English-language version is what most international readers and search engines see anyway.
